Funeral Services for John Valen at Slater Church

Slater, April 4 -- Funeral services for John Valen, 64, of Green Mountain, Ia., were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Bethlehem church in Slater. The ministers Henry Gordon Don Patten had charge of the services. The former read the 90th Psalm as his text and the latter the 116th Psalm.

Two solos, "Abide With Me," and "Alone With God" were sung by Henry Gordon. The floral offerings were very beautiful. Pallbearers were Ed Lee of Slater, George Lee of Cambridge, Roy Lee of Perry, Glen Johnson, Ralph LeMaster and Ralph Wisecup of near Woodward. Burial was made in the Slater cemetery.

John Valen was born in Norway, June 5, 1876, and died Mar. 26, at the University hospital at Iowa City from a heart ailment His parents were John and Bertha Valen, both of whom preceded him in death. When John was 5 years old, the family came to America and settled in Huxley, where they lived a number of years before moving to Slater. He learned the blacksmith trade from his father and followed that line of work the remainder of his life. The family moved to Slater a number of years ago.

His marriage to Miss Louise Johnson took place while he was employed at Kanawha. Four children were born to this union, all of whom survive. Namely, they are two sons, Leslie and Leonard of Madison, Wis., two daughters, Mrs. Bertha Africa of Armstrong and Mrs. Myrtle Crowe of Jackson, Minn. He is also survived by four sisters, Misses Julia and Marie Valen of Slater, Mrs. Anna Kamply and Mrs. Bertha Kalsem of Huxley; also two brothers, Tom Valen of Des Moines, and Sanford Valen of Minneapolis, Minn.
