Funeral Services for Mrs. Bertha Valen at Slater Monday

Slater, Sept. 25--Funeral services for Mrs. Bertha Valen were held Monday afternoon at 1:30 at the home and two o'clock at the Lincoln church.The services were in charge of Rev. P. Buland of Cambridge, assisted by Rev. E. R. Rorem of the Bethlehem church. The floral offerings were unusually beautiful.
Lewis Malmin sang a Norwegian song "Modes Vi". Mrs. M. S. Heggen and Mrs. A. L. Peterson sang two duets, "God Will Take care of You" and "The Lord Is My Shepherd."
The pall bearers were Gunder Rullestad of Huxley, H. E. Halverson, L. A. Larson, C. R. Sydness, Severt and Joseph Houge.
Bertha Lee was born on March 18, 1854 in Fjeldberg, Norway and died at her home here Friday, September 20th, at the age of 81 years, 6 months and 2 days.
She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Her marriage to John Valen took place in Fjeldberg, Norway, in 1875. They came to America in 1882 and made their home in Huxley.
Thirteen children were born to this union. Six of the children and her husband preceded her in death. She was a devoted wife and a kind and loving mother.
Her health had been failing the past two years, but the past week she suffered a heart attack and did not recover from its effects but became gradually weaker. She leaves to mourn her loss three sons John of Green Mountain, Tom of Waterloo, and Sanford of Minneapolis; also four daughters Mrs. Anna Kampley and Mrs. Bertha Kalsem of Huxley, Misses Julia and Marie Valen of Slater. Also 18 grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren. All were present at the services.
The Valen family has resided in Slater the past 26 years.
