THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, May 2, 1929, page 1. "MRS. ETTA DAWSON-LAYCOOK - Etta M. Dawson was born at Maxwell, Iowa, January 7, 1883, and died at her home in Covina, Sunday, April 14, 1929, aged 46 years. She came to Covina about 28 years ago and for a time lived with her sister, Mr. J. H. Brubaker. She was married August 28, 1915, to Joseph E. Laycook, to whom were born three children - two girls and one boy - the eldest girl just entering high school. Her father and mother, Daniel and Elizabeth Dawson, came to California from Iowa later, the former having passed away about four years ago. Her mother has been at the Laycook home for some doing what she could to make her daughter's illness more endurable. The funeral was held at the Christiansen & Moore parlors Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Geo. F. Chemberlen, of the Brethren church, and Rev. W. W. Catherwood of Riverside, former pastor of the Baptist church in Covina. The floral tributes were many and gorgeous. The stricken husband is one of the members of the city board of trustees and a prominent rancher. The business houses of Covina closed from 2 to 3:30 while the funeral was in progress. The large attendance attested the respect in which deceased was held. Mrs. Laycook was an exceptionally bright and capable woman, devoted to her home, her husband and children. She was mentally alert and of happy disposition, getting a great enjoyment from life. Realizing that her ailment was likely to prove fatal sooner or later her husband took her on various trips visiting relatives and friends and did his utmost to make her remaining days as happy as possible. Besides the bereaved husband, those left to mourn the loss of deceased are Mr. d. O. Dawson, mother. Mary Elizabeth, the eldest daughter, age 13 years; Miriam, aged 9, and Horton, aged 6; two sisters, Mrs. J. H. Bru____________, ________Weaver, of Twin Falls, Idaho; a brother, J. C. Dawson, of Maxwell, Iowa. Covina (Cal.) Citizen."
