"GEORGE WALTER JONES. - George Walter Jones, the youngest son of William and Hannah Jones, was born on May 13, 1883, and passed to his reward on April 28, 1940, at 10:30 o'clock in the morning at the Iowa Lutheran Hospital at the age of 56 years, 11 months and 14 days. His death was caused by a fatal automobile crash which occurred one-fourth of a mile from his farm home. George never returned to consciousness following the crash. He was preceded in his journey by his two brother, John and William and one sister, Hattie. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Bertha; one son, William, and one granddaughter, Bertha Anna, and three sisters, Mrs. Bert Kirk and Mrs. George Nash, of Maxwell, and Mrs. S. W. Kurtz, of Des Moines, as well as unnumbered friends. George was united in marriage to Bertha Ann Whitehead, of Panora, Iowa, on March 15, 1913. She was his constant companion and helper along the pathway of life. This union was blessed with the one son, George William Jones, who recently completed his legal training and who has opened his practice in Des Moines. George was active and interested in the finer things of life as is evidenced by his participation in local community activities as well as those which reached beyond his immediate vicinity. He served in a useful capacity on the Maxwell school board and often spoke with pride of the new gymnasium built while he was on the board. He also served on the board of directors of the Des Moines Cooperative dairy helping to bring cooperation into actuality. The AAA program benefited under his direction and leadership, he having been the former Polk County Chairman. He was also very active in the work of the Loring Evangelical Church, and rightly so for his parents, William and Hannah Jones, provided the grounds upon which the church is located and the site for Mount Zion Cemetery. Having this heritage George served as Sunday School Superintendent for several years and taught the Willing Workers Class as well. He also served on the board of trustees and the board of stewards. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon, May 3, at the Loring church, conducted by Rev. C. E. Theile, of Carlisle, assisted by Rev. Robinson and Rev. P. R. Epley. Eldon Geisler sang two solos, "Sometime We'll Understand" and "In the Upper Garden," accompanied at the piano by Mrs. C. Dykstra. The floral offerings were beautiful and profuse. Mrs. W. Hawkins and Mrs. P. Epley assisted in arranging the flowers. The pallbearers were Judge Loy Ladd, L. O. Linstrum, Art Dunahoo, O. Braught, Addison Parker and Bert Ridgway. Honorary pallbearers wee A. N. Heggen, Scott Ellis, C. H. Barkley, A. G. Davis, C. S. Laverty, J. A. Peters, L. E. Staker. Burial was made in the Loring cemetery. Out of town relatives and friends in attendance at the funeral were: Mrs. Ray Weeda and daughter, Prof. I. F. Neff, Mrs. W. B. Chase, Rev.
