THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, January 23, 1896, Page 4, columns 3-4. "Obituary. - Barbara Ellen John was born in Carroll county, Ind., October 24, 1847. She was the youngest child of John B. and Elizabeth Olinger. The parents brought her to Iowa when she was a mere child. When about twelve years of age she professed religion and united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church in this neighborhood and continued in its communion until her death. She was united in marriage with Daniel W. John on March 17, 1867, by Rev. J. Bowman. There were eight children, five daughters and three sons, Mary, the fourth daughter, was buried April 25, 1889. The living children were all at home when their mother's death occurred, on Saturday, January 18, 1896, near 1 p.m. at the home three miles northeast of town. For many months she had been out of health, having a complication of troubles. The best medical skill in the country was sought; no one could have received better care. All that a loving husband and fond children could do was cheerfully done, relatives, neighbors and friends were all deeply interested, but all was without avail, death had marked her for his victim. She was fully prepared and told the family not to weep for her when she was gone. A noble christian woman has gone from our midst. For about forty years she had lived in Indian Creek township. The funeral took place in Cumberland Presbyterian church on Monday, January 20, 1896, at 11 a. m. The house was filled with a large and very serious audience, Mrs. F. W. Hill was at the organ, the singers were Mrs. Southwick, soprano; S. B. Miller, tenor; J. I. Fleming, bass; Misses Edna Ellis and Ethel Thompson, alto. The music had been selected by the the **family and was vary** impressively rendered. The pall-bearers were W. J. Veneman, C. H. Dickey, H. M. Cole, John Hall, J. E. Gibson and W. H. Benson. Rev. Doty and Rev. Troup each offered prayer, and Rev. R. A. Ferguson conducted the other services, preaching the sermon from Matt. 13; 43. She was a sister to J. M. Olinger and also to Geo. W. Olinger, deceased, also a half sister to W. T. John and Mrs. A. Pritchard, of this community and Mrs. Henry Brubaker, of California. Jackson Brown, a half brother died many years ago. The remains were taken to the cemetery and laid close by those of the daughter, Mary, amid many tears and regrets. The family, a large circle of relatives, the church and many friends feel very much the loss that her removal has caused. She rests in peace. Card of Thanks. D. W. John and family are profoundly grateful to all their neighbors and friends for the kindness so generously bestowed on them during the sickness and death of the beloved wife and mother, which has made their home so sad. They invoke Heaven's richest blessing upon all and trust that all may be spared such a sorrow for many years."
