HILLIS CRAIN

ZEARING--Services for Hillis Crain who died Dec. 5 in the Story County Hospital in Nevada were Sunday, Dec. 8 at the Christian church in Zearing, with the Rev. John Bartlett officiating.

Casket bearers were Delos Dakins, Leo Lones, Bob Herr, Kenneth Jones, Aaron Buffington and Max McBride.

Mrs. Delos Dakins accompanied the quartette, Dale Johnston, Glen McBride, Gordon Lundy and Paul Lundy. Flowers were cared for by Mrs. Steve Chance, Mrs. Leo Jones and Mrs. Brantley Jones. Graveside services were conducted by the Masonic Lodge No. 469.

Life Sketch

Hillis Crain, son of Arthur and Caroline Crain, was born near Zearing, Iowa, May 20, 1889 and died Dec. 5, at the Nevada Hospital at the age of 68 years.

During his life he was engaged in farming in Hardin and Story counties. In December 1943 he moved into Zearing and continued farming in partnership with his son Eldon until January 1957.

On Dec. 24, 1909 he was united in marriage to Myrtle Griffith; to this union were born three children, Theda, Eldon and Virgil.

He became a member of the Grant Center Christian church as a young man in 1923 and transferred his membership to the Zearing Christian church. He served as a member of the church board for a number of years, presiding as chairman for two years. He was a member of the Pacific Lodge No. 469 A. F. and A. M. and was active in many civic and community groups.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Charles.

He is survived by his wife, Myrtle, a daughter, Mrs. Rolland Philpot of Nevada; two sons, Eldon of Zearing and Virgil of Des Moines, along with eight grandchildren. Also surviving are one brother Albert of Zearing and two sisters, Mrs. Jessie Schuelter of Des Moines and Mrs. W. A. Dodd of Chapin, as well as three nephews and three nieces.
