Services Held For Joe C. Smay
Services for Joe C. Smay, 61, manager of the Farmers Elevator at Bondurant were held at 1:30 p. m. Monday in the Christian church, with burial in the cemetery at Nevada.
Joe Carroll Smay, son of Rev. L. J. U. and Sadie Smay, was born in Nevada, Iowa June 23, 1896, and departed from this life Oct. 25, 1957, at Veterans Hospital in Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his mother, father and sister, Mildred Cammack. Joe spent his boyhood days in the vicinity of Nevada with Mr. and Mrs. Will Roe as foster parents.
He was united in marriage to Greta Viola Shalley July 31, 1926, in Des Moines. The major part of Joe's life was associated with the grain business. He was a member of King David Masonic Lodge of Altoona. Worshipful Master in 1940, also a member of the Eastern Star in Altoona a charter member of the Bondurant Lions Club, Past Commander of Bondurant American Legion.
Besides his wife, Viola, he is survived by a foster sister, Mrs. Goldman Hankins of Nevada; two brothers, Walter of Fernald, Eugene of Omaha; two sisters, Maurine Macy of Des Moines and Irma Samples of Stamford, Neb.; two half brothers, LeRoy of Marysville, Mo. and Paul of Chicago; his stepmother of Ottawa, Kans. and nieces, nephews, one uncle and a host of friends.
