"Obituary - Mrs. Emily Gibson, one of the earliest settlers and best known residents of this part of the country, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Juliet Pearson, east of town at five o'clock Wednesday morning. She had been suffering for a long time and has been entirely helpless for several days although she bore it all patiently and was only waiting for the summons to come calling her up higher. Emily Ann Hardenbrook was born at Mansfield, Ohio, April 18, 1825 and died near Maxwell, Iowa, September 7, 1904, aged seventy-nine years, four months and nineteen days. She grew to womanhood in Ohio, but while yet a young lady, the family moved to Noble county, Ind., where she was married to David Gibson in 1846. To this union eleven children were born, seven of whom survive her, two having died in infancy and two after they had grown to maturity. Mr. Gibson died about ten years ago. In 1864, Mr. and Mrs. Gibson moved to Iowa and settled at Peoria City, but afterward moved to a farm in Jasper county, where they lived for many years and afterward moved to Maxwell** she had since made her home in Story county. Mrs. Gibson was a conscientious christian woman, having been affiliated with the M. E. church, but for the last twenty-five years has been a member of the M. P. church. The funeral will be held at Peoria church Thursday at 1:30 p. m., in charge of Rev. A. Q. Gharrett and interment will be made in the Peoria City cemetery by the side of her husband. Thus another pioneer has gone, and this time a lady of upright character, whose influence has ever been for the good and whose whole life was spent in trying to help uplift humanity. Her loss will be greatly felt and especially by her own children, who have revered her to the highest extent. They will have the sincere sympathy of a multitude of friends in this their time of great sorrow." **Editorial note - capitalization of words is as found in the original newspaper article.
