JOHN NILAND

The community was greatly shocked Wednesday afternoon when the report spread abroad that Mr. John Niland had dropped dead at his dinner table. Apparently he was in his usual healthy condition and his family were unaware of any change in him until his head dropped and he was practically dead. Mr. Niland has spent nearly his entire life in or near Colo, and was prominent in business and civic circles. For a number of years he has been proprietor of one of the largest general stores in town. He was president of the Colo Savings Bank and also Town Treasurer. He was a man of sterling worth and his friends are numbered by his acquaintances. He leaves to mourn their loss his wife, five children, two sisters and one brother besides numerous other relatives and host of friends, who deeply regret his untimely death and extend heartfelt sympathy to his family is their sore bereavement. Funeral services were held this (Friday) morning at St. Mary's church and interment made in St. James cemetery.

JOHN NILAND

John Niland was born at Bertram, Linn county, Iowa, September 25, 1864, and passed from this life at his home in Colo, Iowa, Wednesday, September 29th, 1915, age 51 years and 4 days. When a youth he moved with his parents to Colo and since that time his home has always been in or near Colo. In April 1894 he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Reed. His business life began in the employ of Mr. P. W. Hopkins with whom he remained for several years. Twenty four years ago he established a general store of his own, which has grown, as time passed, until at the time of his death he was considered one of the leading merchants of Colo. Mr. Niland was always interested in public betterment and had conscientiously performed his duties in the different office of the town to which he was elected. At the time of his death he was town treasurer. He was also president of the Colo Savings Bank. Mr. Niland was a devout christian, a loyal and faithful member of the Roman Catholic church. His social affiliations were the M. W. A., Mystic Workers and Knights of Columbu. He was a man who made many friends during his years of dealing with the public. His quiet kindly manner caused all who met him to regard him with high esteem. He was a devoted husband and father, a loyal friend and a good neighbor, and his untimely death caused a sadness to pass over the entire community. Death was due to Emboli and came instantly and without warning while he and his family were enjoying dinner at home. He leaves to mourn their loss his wife and five children, Lillian, Margaret, Elma, Reed and Clare, one brother Tom Niland living east of Colo, two sisters Mrs. John Morell and Mrs. A. G. Glann both of Colo, besides numerous other relatives and friends. The funeral took place Friday at 10 o'clock a. m. conducted by Father Nichols who held solemn high mass. Interment was made in St. James cemetery.
