OLD SETTLER LAID TO REST

Torris Thompson Died at His Home in This City Saturday Evening After An Extended Illness

Father had been in failing health for over a year prior to his death and during the last five months of his illness, his weakened condition necessitated his remaining in bed, where he lay peacefully awaiting the final summons.

He was born in Etna, Norway, March 25, 1841. Here he grew to manhood and on July 1, 1868 he was joined in marriage to Anna Gronstad also of Etna, Norway. In the year 1870 they in company with many of their friends and relatives took passage on the sail boat "Protector" arriving in Quebec in the first days of June. It took them seven weeks and two days to cross the Atlantic. They settled in Howard Township that same year, beginning their life in this country on a farm located south east of town. He remained on the farm located south of town. He remained on the farm until the year 1895 when he moved to Roland where he engaged in business. Five years later he retired from active business life and since then he has lived in retirement here, up to the time of his death, which occurred Saturday evening Oct. 11, 1913.

The funeral services were conducted from Salems church last Tuesday afternoon. He was buried in the Roland Cemetery, Rev. J. N. Sandven officiated.
