Funeral Service for Edwin L. Croft Held At Slater

Slater, Oct. 12 -- Funeral services for Edwin L. Croft, 74, were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Riis Funeral Home. The services were in charge of Rev. Curt Norm of the Methodist church who read 2 Cor. 5:1-10, which was followed by prayer. James Croft of Mount Vernon sang a solo, "Beneath the Cross of Jesus." A number of gifts of money to the missions and Methodist church were given by relatives and friends. Rev. Noren gave a brief message from Genesis 5:24. A. A. Chader sang two solos, "The City Foursquare", and "The Beautiful City Beyond." The pall bearers were Dwight Croft of Sheldahl, Lester Croft of Sheldahl, George Schonhorst, LeRoy Croft of Adel, Verne Nelson of Ames, and A. L. Peterson of Slater. Interment was made in the Slater cemetery.

Edwin L. Croft, son of the later Eric and Martha Croft, was born on a farm a mile west of Slater in Boone county, February 27, 1871, and passed away Sunday, October 7, 1945, from a heart attack, at the age of 74 years, 7 months and 11 days.

He was one of nine children, eight boys and one girl. All except one brother, John Croft of Sheldahl, preceded him in death. He grew to manhood on his father's farm. He was baggage man at the Slater depot for several years. He then became associated with the firm of Peterson and Croft. Later he was manager of the People's Store, and for about 20 years was in the grocery business. He spent all his life in this territory except for about a year when he went to Florida.

He was united in marriage to Margaret Johnson on February 25, 1896, at Cambridge, Iowa, by Rev. J. M. Williams of the Methodist church. To this union two sons were born. Some time after he was married he became a member of the Methodist church of Slater and was very active. The present home was built soon after their marriage and this home was in later years a place of study and labor. Much of his spare time away from the store he spent with the flowers and shrubbery and with his Bible and books. He was a profound student of spiritual things and became to many a helper and advisor. With unflinching courage he would stand for the things he believed in, be it ethical, spiritual or moral values. His store was known by the name of Home Market. He was well liked by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife and two sons, Harold E. Croft of Slater and Hugh J. Croft of Mount Vernon, a brother, John F. of Sheldahl, five grandchildren, nieces and nephews and other relatives, and a host of friends.
