Springer Funeral Held at McCallsburg; Burial There

Special to the Journal:
McCallsburg, April 11--The funeral of H. C. Springer was held Tuesday afternoon from the Presbyterian church in charge of Rev. J. M. Kennedy of Nevada. The pall bearers were W. H. Reid, John Schauper, R. E. Baumgardner, Henry Mehlow, Oscar Barkly and James Hall. The flowers were in charge of Mrs. Hall and Mrs. R. E. Baumgardner. The music was furnished by Mrs. F. E. Nail and Miss Catherine Craig with Miss Cleo Tett at the piano who sang "Saved by Grace" and "No Night There." Burial was made in the family lot in the Warren township cemetery by the side of the wife who preceded him 12 years ago.

Hickson C. Springer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus Springer, was born in Ohio, July 22, 1856 and passed away at the Iowa sanitarium at Nevada, April 2, 1938 at the age of 81 years, 8 months and 12 days.

He came to Iowa with his parents in 1861, moving to Story county in 1863 where he has since made his home with the exception of two years in Nebraska and two years in Mason City. He was married to Miss Sophronia Kent at Nevada, Nov. 28, 1888 who died at McCallsburg Dec. 22, 1926 To this union was born six children left to mourn his loss are, Howard L. of Boxholm, Charles Wesley and Mrs. T. M. Johnson of McCallsburg and Homer H. of Artesian, S. D. and eight grandchildren. He was a faithful member of the Presbyterian church, serving as elder for quite a number of years. He was an active worker until the last few months of life, always interested in anything for the betterment of the community. The last few weeks that he was able to read, were spent reading his Bible, the book of his choice.

Mr. Springer was one of the real pioneers of this locality, having lived in and around McCallsburg for so many years. The last few years he had a room at the hotel, but when his health began to fail, he went to the home of his son Wesley, where he was cared for until the fatal malady had affected him until it was thought best to take him to the sanitarium where he spent the last five weeks of his life.

Out of town people in attendance at the funeral were Howard L. Springer of Boxholm, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. Amos Anderson of Nevada, Mrs. Martin Minde and O. B. Anderson of Roland and Clarence Anderson of Zearing.
