Funeral Services Held Wednesday for John O. Chance
Special to the Journal.
Zearing, July 18--Funeral rites for J. O. Chance, 65, native son of this community, who died at the Deaconess hospital in Marshalltown Monday, July 13, were held at the Evangelical church here Wednesday with Rev. R. E. Kerney officiating. The songs were by a quartet consisting of Glen and Max McBride and Carrol Bailey and Eldon Crain with Mardean Joyce as pianist. Burial was in the Zearing cemetery.Pallbearers were J. A. Johnston, John Hoberland, Gus Ludwig, John Allen, Morris Britten, August Cerka. Flowers were cared for by Mrs. R. R. Comfort. Burial was in the Zearing cemetery.
John Oliver Chance son of Jonathon and Sarah Chance, was born near Zearing, Iowa, May 10, 1877, and died July 13, 1942, at the age of 65 years, 2 months and 3 days. He spent his entire live in or near Zearing.
On March 9, 1898 he was united in marriage to Miss Jennie Ruxton and he leaves his wife to mourn his passing. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, T. S. Chance of Des Moines, Jerry Chance of Zearing and one sister, Mrs. Bertha Thornton, also of Zearing.
Mr. Chance had been in failing health for some time and on April 22 went to the hospital where he stayed fifteen days. After several weeks at home he returned to the hospital June 29 where every thing possible was done to provide care and comfort for him. Mrs. Chance rendered faithful and constant care throughout his illness.
Mr. Chance always took a great interest in the work on the farm. He was a great lover of home, a true and faithful husband and a good neighbor, always willing to help in time of need.
