The following sketch was read by the minister:
Shirley Mae Boston was the daughter of Glen D. and Lillie B. Boston. She was born on a farm south of McCallsburg on April 8, 1931, and has resided with her parents near McCallsburg during the years of her life.
She began her schooling in the local schools and this year had completed her work in the first five grades. Because of illness she missed many months of public school work but through home work and apt work as a pupil she was able to keep in the same grade with her class mates.
On February 5, 1939, Shirley was received into membership in the McCallsburg Presbyterian church and was administered the sacrament of baptism. She was a girl of sunny and cheerful disposition and one who faced the future with every confidence. She was friendly with her pastor and interested in her church and she knew the joy of Christian hope and faith.
Shirley was early troubled with illness and in May of 1938 developed rheumatic fever from which it seemed impossible to make a complete recovery. She spent some 18 months in bed and during much of this time was very ill. She then recovered sufficiently to resume her school work and to enjoy the short years that were left to her. The same illness reoccurred June 4th of this year and ended in her death on June 16th at 5:00 a. m. Constant care was given to her throughout her days of illness and every aid that might better her condition, was secured. Even when very ill, Shirley kept her cheerful nature and during her illness of 18 months, was a source of inspiration to all who came to visit her. She learned to amuse herself by composing verses and playing games. In playing these games she often used the names of her friends as players in the games she played. This was just one more evidence of her friendliness she felt for other people.
One brother, Merlin Dale, preceded Shirley in death several years ago when he was but four years of age. Surviving today are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Boston, her sister, Irene (Mrs. J. D.) Morris, her brother, Marvin Glen, and two of her grandparents, Mrs. Ella Boston and Mrs. Ellen Huntrods. There are also several aunts and uncles and others near kin. These, with her many friends, will always remember well of Shirley and of the valiant way she lived.
