FORMER HOWARD TOWNSHIP MAN DEAD
Hon J. M. Johnson, Former Resident of This Place Passed Away At Bisbee, N. D. Saturday April 19th.
Friends and relatives at this place received word last week, of the death of J. M. Johnson, of Bisbee, N. D. He passed away Saturday, April 19th. Mr. Johnson will be remembered by most of the older people of this vicinity, as he lived here some years ago. The following is taken from the Bisbee Gazette.
Saturday morning the report reached here that J. M. Johnson, or J. M., as he was commonly called by his many friends and acquaintances, was born in Norway, near Bergen Jan. 11th, 1853. When he was four years old he came with his parents to America and settled first in Illinois where they remained only a few years, and then to Story County, Iowa, where they remained until their death. At the latter place J. M. grew to manhood and when old enough, farmed for himself until 1884 when he became imbued with desires to go west and to North Dakota where he has remained since. In 1889 he file a claim in Pleasant Valley Township Rollette County, and here he continued up to the time of his death.
On Dec. 22nd, 1898, J. M. was married to Miss Elisa Jemtrud, who still survives him and is the only immediate member of the family, there not being any issue from their wedlock; Oscar, the little boy being an adopted child who has lived with them since his birth ten years ago.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Silness assisted by Rev. Strandness; the cortege being the largest ever seen; friends and acquaintances from far and near having gathered to pay their last respect to an obliging neighbor, kind friend and good man.
