Mrs. Riddlesbarger Longtime Nevada Resident Laid to Rest
Final rites for Mrs. J. H. Riddlesbarger, 83, longtime Nevada woman, who passed away at the home of her son Ray Riddlesbarger, near here, January 30, were held February 1, at the Methodist church, of which she was life long member, with her pastor Rev. Reynolds C. Murdock, in charge.
The minister who had resigned his work here to enter into the U. S. army as a chaplain, postponed his leaving for a few hours to have charge of the service.
There were two songs, "Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross," and "Shall We Gather at the River," by Mrs. Ansel Freeland, with Mrs. Garnet Hathaway at the organ.
The church was well filled with old neighbors and friends, gathered with members of the family, to pay final tribute of respect to Mrs. Riddlesbarger.
Casket bearers were Ray Cagwin, Raymond O'Donnell, Glen R. Newton, Frank Vail, Frank Kinsman and Elmer Wendell.
The following brief lifesketch of the deceased was read during the service:
"Almira Cordelia, the youngest of two daughters of William and Julia Ann Baldwin, was born April 11, 1859 in Union, Henry county, Illinois. She lived with her parents until the age of nine with the exception of one year spent at Utica, New York. Following this they moved to Michigan for a year and returned to Illinois settling at Franklin Grove.
"There she grew to young womanhood and on December 22, 1877 was united in marriage to John H. Riddlesbarger. A short time after their marriage they moved to a farm in Milford township, Story county, Iowa. After a year they returned to Franklin Grove. In 1887 they traveled back to Iowa and settled in Nevada where Mr. Riddlesbarger engaged in the livestock and poultry business until the time of his death on July 26, 1922. One son, Lee R., also preceded her in death on October 23, 1942.
"Mrs. Riddlesbarger united with the Nevada Methodist church in 1857. One could truly say that her whole life centered about her church. No service in her church ever went unattended, if she were able to get there. She sang in its choir and for funerals, vitally interested in the missionary program of the church.
"About three years ago age began to tell upon her, but not until the last week or two was he bedfast. She departed this life at the Ray Riddlesbarger home, Saturday, January 30, 1943, at 4:00 a. m. Left to morn the loss of a kind and devoted mother are three children, Mrs. Edna Satterlee of Davenport, Iowa; Guy and Ray of Nevada. Besides the daughter and two sons, she leaves six grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, the nieces and nephews in the families of the deceased sister, Mrs. A. H. Wingert, and scores of neighbors and friends."
