Funeral Services Held At McCallsburg For Oscar Helland

McCallsburg, March 27--The funeral for Oscar Helland, 57 who died March 18, took place Monday, March 22, with a prayer service at the home at 1:30 and services at the church were at 2:00 with the pastor, H. N. Bakke, in charge, Mesdames B. A. Imsland and O. E. Ritland, with Mrs. Clyde Baumgardner at the piano sang two songs, "The Old Rugged Cross" and "No Night There."

There were many people who honored their relative and friend by turning out at the funeral. Some had contributed beautiful bouquets of flowers, other gave gifts of money to various church activities, in his memory.

The pallbearers were Ed Anderson, Orville Ellingson, Carl Twedt, Philip Martins, August Newgaard and Rasmus Thompson. The remains were laid to rest in Warren Township cemetery.

The brothers and sisters, with the exception of Otis Helland and Mrs. Minerva Krink of Washington were present for the funeral.

From out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Ivo Moon of Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Johnson and Geneva of Williams, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Malrims of Des Moines, Mrs. Duane Risdal of Marshalltown, Mr. and Mrs. Art Sesker, Mrs. Marjorie Rench of Cambridge, John Hougen of Story City and several from neighboring towns.

The following obituary was read by the minister during the service.

"Oscar Helland was born April 23rd, 1886 in Petersburg, N. D., and passed away at his home in McCallsburg, Ia., Mar. 18, 1943, after an illness of several years. He was 56 years and 11 months old. "He has been a resident of McCallsburg practically all of his life, and was a member of the Bethany Lutheran church.

In 1911 he married Olive Jacobson, and to this union was born one son, Adrian, who is at present serving in the United States Navy. Olive passed away in 1917. On Nov. 7, 1929 he was united in marriage to Ellen Sesker, Cambridge, Iowa.

Those who mourn his death, besides his wife and Adrian, are his mother, Mrs. Hannah Helland, Sadie, Mrs. Sam Sampson of McCallsburg, Bertha, Mrs. Isaac Strum of McCallsburg, Lavina, Mrs. Ivan Johnson of Williams, John Helland of McCallsburg, Clarence Helland of Roland, Blanche, Mrs. Ivae Moon of Chicago, Otis Helland of Seattle, Wash., Minerva, Mrs. Emery Krink of Enumelau, Wash.

Preceding him in death are his father, Olis Helland who passed away in 1930, Josie, the former Mrs. Martin Houskins, who died in 1924, 2 sisters and a brother, who passed away in their early years.
