THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, April 29, 1926, page 1, column 5. “JONATHAN CLEVERLEY – Funeral services for Jonathan Cleverley, aged pioneer of Jasper county, who passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary Kimberley, south of Collins, Friday evening, were held from the Church of Christ at Collins Monday afternoon with Rev. DeLoss Marken, of this place, in charge of the services at the church and the Masonic lodge of Collins, in charge of the ritualistic services at the grave in the Peoria cemetery. Jonathan Cleverley was born in London, England, April 12, 1836, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary Kimberley, near Collins, Iowa, April 23, 1926, aged ninety years and eleven days. He came to America with his father at the age of eleven years, going at once into the back woods of New York state where he worked in the lumber camps and sawmills until the year 1854 when he came to Allamakee county, Iowa where he bought a small farm and engaged in the farming business. On July 27, 1862 he was united in marriage to Jane Elizabeth Owen at the home of his brother-in-law, Wm. McClintock, in Winneshiek county, Iowa. For fourteen years they made their home on the farm in Allamakee county, where their six children were born, two of whom died in infancy. In April 1876 the family moved to Jasper county where they established a home on the farm still owned by Mr. Cleverley at the time of his death. In the spring of 1906 Mr. and Mrs. Cleverley retired from active farm life by moving to Collins, where they resided until the death of Mrs. Cleverley on July 2 last year. He is survived by four children, Mrs. Mary Kimberley and Frank E. of Collins, Mrs. Maria Clapper of Springfield, Mo., and J. H. of Maxwell, also twenty grandchildren and twenty-three great grandchildren. His life has been an inspiration to his family and acquaintances. Honest, industrious, patient and kind, he was of all who knew him. He has always lived a clean life, never having indulged in any excesses that tend to destroy true manhood, therefore, has had the blessing of good health and has unselfishly devoted himself to the care of his life companion, who had been more or less of an individual** for a number of years. Mr. Cleverley was a member of the Masonic order for sixty years, a charter member of Herald Lodge, of Maxwell, and later Worshipful Master of the Collins lodge.”
