Albert D. (Bert) Hix Laid to Rest In Zearing Cemetery

Zearing, August 29: Funeral services for the late Albert D. (Bert) Hix, 84, prominent Story county resident who passed away Friday, Aug 23 at the hospital in State Center, were held Sunday afternoon from the Zearing Evangelical church with his pastor, the Reverend Fuller in charge. The last rites were largely attended.

Music was furnished by Mary McBride Johnson, pianist, and Mrs. Myrtle Martin and Mrs. Orpha Hankins as singers. The large number of flowers, mutely testifying to the high esteem in which the deceased was held, were in charge of Mrs. Leon Deal, Mrs. Virgil Chance and Mrs. Roy Chitty.

The casket bearers were Cecil Hix, Ray Lightfoot, Luther Hix, Jack Dudley, Leon Deal and Virgil Chance. Committal was in the beautiful Zearing cemetery.

The following obituary was read by Rev. Fuller.

"Albert Douglas Hix, son of Mr. and Mrs. Seymore Hix, was born at Suchamore, Ill. on May 27, 1862. He came to this community settling in the Johnson Grove neighborhood with his parents 10 years later. His entire life was spent in the community of Zearing except that first ten years. He was married on Feb. 22, 1891 to Miss Cora Smith, with whom he lived for 55 years, celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary five years ago. To this union three children were born, two of whom survive with their mother. They were Seymore R. of Sioux City, Iowa, Mrs. Elsie Wykle of Cedar Rapids and Lee who passed away Oct. 24, 1926. Two sisters also survive him, Mrs. Susan Eddy of Hampton, Iowa and Mrs. Sadie Saunders of Redfield, Maine. There are also eight grandchildren, Albert D. Hix of Seattle, Wash., Seymore D. Hix of Albuquerque, N. M., Joy B. Hix of Chicago, Ill., Cora A. Wykle of Cedar Rapids, Ia., John D. Wykle , Sarah E. Shepherd and Wilma M. Friddle of Los Angeles, Calif. and Robert S. Hix of Wichita, Kansas. There are also seven great grand children.

"Mr. Hix moved to Zearing in 1884 and became Post Master which position he held for 16 years. He was a pioneer business man in Zearing and as such was honored and respected. He retired from business in 1917. He was an active Mason for 57 years and also a member of the Eastern Star Lodge. He was for many years an active member of the county old age assistance organization.

"About the year 1896 he was converted an united with the Evangelical church of which he was a faithful member until his death which occurred shortly after midnight on August 23 at the hospital in State Center."

The grandchildren who were present for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Robert S. Hix of Wichita, Kansas, Mr. and Mrs. Shephard of Los Angeles, Calif., Miss Joy B. Hix of Chicago, Miss Cora Wykle of Cedar Rapids, a daughter in law, Mrs. Dorothy Hix of Albuquerque, New Mexico and nephews and nieces of Des Moin, who are Mr. and Mrs. Louis Preobe, Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Proebe, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Preobe, Mr. and Mrs. Gale Hufford and family and Mrs. Goldye Painter.
