Mrs. Maria E. Sowers Laid to Rest Monday Afternoon

Story City, Aug. 22 -- Funeral services for Mrs. Marie E. Sowers were held Monday afternoon at two o'clock in the Grace Evangelical church in Story City preceded by a prayer service in the Anderson home at 1:30 Rev. W. E. Ulrich officiating. A short service was also held in the chapel at the Sunset Home in the morning at 9:30. Mrs. Vernon Anderson sang "What A Friend We Have in Jesus", at the two latter services. At the church Katherine Larson sang "In the Garden" and "Safe in the Arms of Jesus."

Burial was in the Story City cemetery.

Pall bearers were Leo G. Olson, Orville Owenson, T. Z. Henryson, Pete Quam, Rasmus Braland and Sam Mackey.

Many relatives from a distance attended the funeral.

Obituary

Marie E. Sowers, daughter of John and Sarah Scott, was born in Chicasaw county, near Nashua, Ia. on March 30, 1866, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John L. Anderson, near Story City, Iowa on Aug. 17, 1946, at the age of 80 years, 4 months and 18 days.

She came with her parents to Hamilton county, Iowa in 1872, where her parents purchased a farm in Clear Lake township. There she grew to womanhood and taught in the rural schools in Clear Lake and Ellsworth townships. Some of her pupils still corresponded with her.

On March 20, 1888, she was united in marriage to Albert Sowers, son of a pioneer family of this community. The marriage was solemnized in Cedar county where her parents had moved in 1887.

All but four years of their married life was spent on the same farm. Mr. Sowers died Jun 4, 1929, and she continued to make her home on the farm until February, 1943, when she entered the Sunset Home at Story City.

Eight children were born to this union, four preceding her in death. Ralph dying in infancy; Alma at the age of four years. Florence in 1922 and Alvin in 1937.

Four children survive to mourn her loss. They are Grace Anderson of Story City, Iowa, Earl L. Sowers of St. James, Minn., Wilbur and Clarence Sowers of Story City, Iowa, also eleven grandchildren and one great grandson. She was the last of her family. Her youngest brother passed away in March of this year.
