Owen E. Sampson, 76, of Story City, died Jan. 31, 2020, at the Madrid Home in Madrid. A Celebration of Life Service will be Wednesday, Feb. 5, at 11 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the church.

Owen was born on Jan. 21, 1944, in Ames to Arnold and Alma (Dickinson) Sampson. He grew up on a farm west of Story City. His family always raised horses and Owen had so many great memories of horseback riding with his family and neighbors. He loved the outdoors and for many years hunted with his family and friends.

Owen married Gloria Solyst on Dec. 19, 1964. He worked most of his life as a carpenter; his favorite jobs included working and building houses for several years with Duane Matson, Matson Builders, Freidrich and Sons, and for many years for HPC in Ames.

Owen made friends far and wide, had a great sense of humor and loved to help others if he could. If you were a friend of Owen, you were always his friend. He was an avid NASCAR and Viking fan.

Owen was a life-long member of Grace United Methodist Church and was a founding member of the Skunk River 4X4 club. As he grew older he could often be found riding his bicycle around the streets of Story City. Lots of beautiful flower and vegetable gardens in Story City were rototilled by Owen. He was active in the Kiwanis paper collection drive and he and Gloria often delivered meals on wheels to the elderly.

The last few years he began to experience various physical difficulties and was finally diagnosed with multiple systems atrophy (MSA) in June. We would like to thank the many friends and relatives who stood by us these past months.

Owen is survived by his wife Gloria; his sister, Sharon (Duane) Matson; his brother, Alan (Paula) Sampson all of Story City; his sisters-in-law, Barb Ryan and Gayle (Bob) DeMasse; nieces, Addy and Shantine DeMasse, Kara (Rich) Shulte, Carissa (Eric) Beer, Kylie (Leland) Schipper and Colette (Brett) Barnett; nephews, Jason (Nicki) Ryan, Lucas (Laura) Sampson and Tracy (Jamie) Matson; many great-nieces and great-nephews and Scott Werner who was like a son to him.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church.

Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City is entrusted with arrangements.
