Services in Zearing For Mrs. D. H. Hix

Funeral services were held in the Brouhard Funeral home in Zearing recently for Mrs. Dorothy H. Hix.

Pall bearers were Raymond Kleespie, Arthur Kleespie, Leon Deal, Fred Smith, Sr., Dale Tisdale and K. L. Cerka.

Songs were sung by Mrs. Judd Cover of Marshalltown, accompanied by Mrs. A. A. Andrews.

Flowers were cared for by Mrs. Leon Deal and Mrs. Mary Kinsall. The services were conducted by Rev. R. A. Dennart. Burial was in Zearing cemetery in the family lot.

Obituary

Dorothy H. Hix, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ezra Smith was born August 21, 1892, near Oskaloosa, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Lee Hix on March 17 1916, in Chicago. They then made their home in Zearing until 1921, when they moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Her husband passed away Oct. 24, 1926, bur she kept her home in Albuquerque until last March when she was taken to the home of her son in Wichita, Kansas where she died.

She was bedfast the last seven months and was kindly cared for by the family. She passed away on Sept. 23, at the age of 56 years, one month and two days.

She leaves to survive her one son, Robert of Wichita, two sisters, Mrs. M. M. O'Brian* of Marshalltown and Mrs. Carlton Brown of Los Angeles, one brother, Russell Smith of Dubuque and one granddaughter Truly Marie, besides a host of friends.

Mrs. Hix was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran church at Albuquerque and was a life member of the Woman's Missionary society of that church.

She was active in Sunday school and church work all her life and lived a loyal Christian life.

She and her son Robert graduated from the University of New Mexico together in 1939. She was a member of the following two national honorary sororities, the Sigma Alph Iota, which is a musical sorority, and Delta Kappa Gamma, an educational sorority.

She was also active in USO work for over four years during the war and received many honors for the service she rendered.

She was an instructoress in the Albuquerque public schools for 18 years and was a pioneer in the field of tonette musical instruction in the schools.

Truly her's was a life of service to God, her family and to humanity. Many friends mourn her passing.

*SUBMITTER'S NOTE: "Mrs. M. M. O'Brian" is the sister of Dorothy Hix. She is actually Mabel Maude (Smith) O'Bryon, wife of Maurice M. O'Bryon. Dorothy and Mabel are the daughters of Ezra Smith and Ida Williams.
