NEVADA EVENING JORNAL, Nevada, Iowa, April 1, 1989, page 1. "Duane Alfred (Barney) Borts, 72, of Nevada, IA died Sat. April 1, 1989 at the Tucson Medical Center in Tucson, AZ while recovering from open heart surgery. Borts was born in Valeria, IA, Oct. 8, 1916 to Harvey W. Borts and Lenora L. Tomlinson. He was baptized in the United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of Nevada High School. On August 10, 1939 he married Mary Ellen (Molly) Bowen in Nevada. Borts was a machinist with the Atomic Energy Commission. He as also served in World War II in the Navy. He was a Mason, a member of the American Legion and the VFW. Survivors include his wife, the former Mary Ellen Borts [Bowen]; 3 daughters, Shery Askland Rock of New York City, NY; Nancy Lee Johnson of Cleveland, OH; and Mary Charlene Smith of New York City, NY; one sister, Delores (Topsy) Peterson of Madrid, IA; and one brother, Darwin (Poot) Borts of Los Angeles, CA; 4 grandchildren, Coleen Johnson of Cleveland, OH; Michael Johnson of East Berlin, Democratic Republic of East Germany; Kevin Johnson and Nancy Ann Johnson of Silverton, OR; and one great grandchild, Abigail Jane Johnson. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Dale and Jack Borts."
