From Rasmusson-Ryan Funeral Home & Crematory obituary, Nevada and Maxwell, Story County, Iowa:
Nadine Ruth Christensen
February 9, 1927 - December 4, 2019Nadine Ruth (White) Christensen, 92, of Nevada IA, went home to be with the Lord on Dec. 4, 2019 at Story Medical Senior Care. Nadine was born February 9, 1927 at home in Belle Plaine, Iowa to George and Mary (Remington, Van Dyke) White. She helped on the family farm while attending school in Belle Plaine. She graduated from Belle Plaine High School in 1944. She then took the course to become a schoolteacher and taught in a one-room schoolhouse following her graduation.
During this time, she met Irvin Christensen at a local movie theater where she was ushering, and he was operating the projector. Their two-year courtship was lovingly documented through many letters. They married on July 6, 1947 and lived in Belle Plaine and Atlantic, Iowa where their families are from. Nadine worked as a waitress during these early years of marriage and sometimes helped her parents on the family farm. In 1950, a son was born, Lynn Arthur. The family moved to Nevada, IA in 1953. A daughter, Carol Ann, was born in 1957. Irv began working in the service station industry during this time, and the family joined Nevada Memorial Lutheran Church establishing a foundation of faith that would continue into the lives of several generations. Sadly, their daughter Carol passed in 1964. In 1965, Irv opened his own service station “Irv’s Service” selling Skelly then DX fuel and repairing automobiles. Irv’s Service was a fixture on Lincoln Hwy until their retirement in 1987. Nadine assisted with keeping the books and was the “go-for girl” picking up parts in Des Moines as needed. During this time, she also worked at White’s Jewelry store.
Nadine was a member of various organizations. She was a treasurer for the local American Foreign Student Exchange, was a member of the American Women’s Business Club, the Seroptimists, and the Loyal Order of Moose. Nadine enjoyed cross-stitch, flower gardening, reading, collecting swans, and most of all, dancing! Nadine loved to dance and went dancing with her devoted friends frequently on into her late eighties! Nadine also enjoyed travelling. She and Irv frequently visited her son’s family as they relocated to the Chicago area and then to North Carolina. They enjoyed visiting their extended family in Iowa. They also were able to enjoy some very special trips to points of interest out west with close friends. They were able to make a once in a lifetime journey to Hawaii by saving auto parts sales points.
Nadine was preceded in death by her parents, husband Irvin, daughter Carol, son Lynn, and sister, Florence (White) Grace. Nadine is survived by her daughter-in-law, Vicki Christensen, her three grandchildren, Wendy Watson (Allen), Ryan Christensen (Summer), and Don Christensen, three great-grandchildren, Harrison, Nathaniel, and Rachel, all of Wilson, NC, and many loving nieces and nephews from the extended White and Christensen families.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to Nevada Memorial Lutheran Church or the Food at First Ministry in Nevada.
Funeral Services will be 11 am, Friday, December 13 at Rasmusson-Ryan Funeral Home (1418 Fawcett Pkwy) in Nevada with Pastor Duane Miller officiating. Interment will be at the Irving Cemetery in Elberon, Iowa later that afternoon. The family will greet friends beginning at 10 am.
