Funeral Services Held Wednesday for Mrs. Sheldahl

Special to the Journal.
Slater, Sept. 12--Funeral service for Mrs. Julia Sheldahl were held Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the Andrew Estrem home and two o'clock at the Bethlehem church.

The services were in charge of Rev. E. R. Rorem, who spoke in the English language. He was assisted by Rev. P. Buland of Cambridge who spoke in the Norwegian language. The many beautiful floral offerings were care for by Miss Anna Lundahl and Mrs. Clint Ersland. The Ladies Aid, of which Mrs. Sheldahl was a member, gave a sum of money to the missions in her memory. Several different groups of relatives and friends also gave money to the mission in her memory. Two granddaughters, Misses Orlett Sheldahl of Des Moines and June Sheldahl of Cambridge sang a duet "One Sweetly Solemn Thought." Mrs. M. S. Heggen sang a Norwegian song "Fly Som En Fugl." The duet, "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" was sung by Mrs. M. S. Heggen and Mrs. A. L. Peterson. The pallbearers were six grandsons, Omer Sheldahl of Midvale, R. B. and Robert Sheldahl of near Cambridge, Milton Sheldahl, Carroll and Irvin Tweedt of Slater. Burial was made in the Bethlehem cemetery.

Julia Brown was born in Stavanger, Norway, August 10th, 1861 and died September 6th, 1936 at the age of 75 years and 27 days. Her parents were John and Margaret Brown.

At the age of 14 years she came to America and made her home with a sister, Mrs. Rasmus Lewis.

She was united in marriage to Eric O. Sheldahl in 1876. Seven children were born to this union. Three of the children preceded her in death, Osmond Sheldahl, Mrs. Eric Ihle and Mrs. Weir Johnson. Mrs. Sheldahl was a quiet and unassuming woman, a devoted wife and mother and sincere friend. She was especially interested in the work of the church.

He husband died April 20th, 1927. Since his death she had made her home with her daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Estrem.

Mrs. Sheldahl had been ill with the flu the past week but her condition was not considered serious. She suffered a heart attack Sunday morning and passed quietly away. She is survived by four children, Andrew Sheldahl of near Cambridge, J. E. Sheldahl, Mrs. Andrew Estrem and Mrs. Maggie Tweedt of Slater, twenty grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Also one brother, Martin Brown of Slater, and a host of relatives and friends.

SUBMITTER'S NOTE: "Julia (Brown) Sheldahl" was born Jorine Jonsdotter Bryne, daughter of Jon Sweinsson/Svendson Bryne and Ane Margrethe Rasmusdotter/Hatteland. Her brother mentioned in the obit, Martin, went as Martin Jonson Brown.

A sister, Marie Jonsdtr Bryne, married Andreas Froyland later adapted to "Freeland" and came to Story County after his death. Marie died in 1918 so is not mentioned. The sister mentioned as Mrs. Rasmus Lewis was Ane M. Bryne who married Erasmus Lewis. She also predeceased Julia dying in 1919 in Story County, Iowa.

Another sister, Elizabeth went by Elizabeth Johnson and married Lewis Rierson 25 January 1866 in Story County, Iowa. She died in 1909.
