Donald Edward Rohde, 84, of Cambridge, passed away Monday, October 21, 2019, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines.

A memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 26 at Nazareth Lutheran Church (517 Vine Street) in Cambridge with Pastor Marcia Kisner officiating.

Don was born November 5, 1934, in Sutherland, Iowa the son of Ernest William Herman Rohde and Norma Hattie Marie Heinl. On December 23, 1983, he was united in marriage to Jane Folkers in Toledo, Ohio. He started his working career as a welder in Southerland then Hoper’s in Hartley, Iowa. From there he went into the meat packing industry at Spencer Pack in Spencer, Iowa and Hospers’s Pack in Hospers, Iowa. Don began his career as a plant maintenance supervisor in the meat packing business at Hawarden, Iowa and it was there he had an injury to his eyes, something he dealt with the rest of his life. After leaving that position, he worked for John Morrell Co. in Estherville, Iowa, Amarillo, Texas and Montgomery, Alabama. He was also a maintenance supervisor in Garden City, Kansas, Warren, Michigan and Hebron, Illinois. Upon returning Iowa in 1989, he worked at Iowa State University as an electrician in the maintenance department and eventually retired. After a short retirement, he went back to work at Lowe’s of Ames in the electrical department for 12 ½ years.

Don enjoyed traveling, especially the trip to Alaska and spending time with family every chance he had.

Don is survived by his children: Pamela (Deryl) Barr of West Des Moines, Douglas (Peggy) Rohde of Urbandale, Darwin (Judy) Rohde of Marysville, Washington; Daryl (Mary) Rohde of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Duane Rohde of San Antonio, TX; Jane’s children: Bradley (Roxann) Brunk of Spencer and Beverly (Nelson) George of Clifford, Michigan; 13 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers: LeRoy, Burdette and Clarence and a sister, Darlene Fink.

Don has been cremated and burial will be at a later date at Calumet Cemetery in O’Brien County.

Rasmusson-Ryan Funeral Home in Nevada is handling arrangements.
