JACOB STUMBAUGH

Jacob Stumbaugh was born in Franklin county, Pa., Feb. 15, 1818, and died in Collins township Feb. 7, 1915, having lived 96 years, 11 months and 22 days. Mr. Stumbaugh came to Illinois when a young man in 1848 and in 1859 settled in Woodford county, Illinois where he lived until 1911 when after the death of his wife he came to Iowa with Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Fevers. Mr. Stumbaugh was united in marriage to Miss Eva Grove in May 28, 1858. They lived together 63 years, celebrating their Golden Anniversary at an advanced age. There were no children born to this union, but they gave parental affection to five orphan children. Thomas and Ellen Lilly were taken when Thomas was 2 1/2 years old and raised to manhood and womenhood. Mr. Thomas Lily's wife died and left 3 children two boys and a girl. Mr. and Mrs. Stumbaugh took these three children and kept them until their father married again. Mrs. Thomas Fevers was the girl and she had been in their home since she was two weeks old. At the death of Mrs. Stumbaugh, he went to live with Mr. and Mrs. Fevers. Mr. Stumbaugh was a man of many good qualities. Mr. and Mrs. Dug Cannn who were old friends and neighbors say that his industry and economy and charity he won for himself many friends and some wealth. Mr. Stumbaugh attributes his long life to abstinence from tobacco and liquors of all kinds and forms. Mr. Stumbaugh was not ill long, was up Saturday. Tired of his long journey he laid down to rest. Those who love and knew him will have many pleasant memories to cherish through life.

The funeral was conducted from the beautiful home of Mr. Thomas Fever and was conducted by the Rev. C. S. Hanson of Collins. The Dalton choir furnished the music. A large number of neighbors and friends were present to offer sympathy to the family. The pall bearers were Mr. Wm. Black, John Hickman, Charley Cooper, I. C. McCord, A. S. McCord and I. K. Dickson. Mr. and Mrs. Fever went with the casket to Elpaso, Illinois to bury him beside his wife.
