From Stevens Memorial Chapel obituary, Ames, Story County, Iowa:

Maria Ispas, 63, of Ames, IA went home to be with the Lord on September 3, 2019, at Mary Greeley Hospital. Maria was born August 20, 1956, in Arad, Romania to Traian and Victoria (Todea) Groza.

Her parents were farmers, owning their own land, knowing that if we didn't grow it we didn't eat it; until the communist government took most of it over and formed cooperatives. She lived a simple life working in the factory since she was 16, plus working in the field after hours. She always wanted to be a nurse but couldn't pursue her dream because of lack of financial and family support.

Maria worked most of her life as a shoe maker and shoe repairer. During that time, she met her husband Mircea Ispas, that was her supervisor at the time. They were married 43 years. They became members of Renasterea Baptist Church in Arad, Romania, where they both came to know the Lord as their personal savior in 1993. They became faithful members of the church and helped with many activities. She always enjoyed baking for friends and church family. She never turned her back to anyone in need and always went above and beyond to help. Maria never wanted to be in the spotlight of any of the activities but always preferred being behind the scenes. Maria was a very sacrificial mom, over attending to her son Oli's needs, yet being firm with him whenever she felt he needed a lesson in obedience that would keep him on a straight and narrow path. Her desire was to always stay close together as a family whether in Romania or The United States. The dream finally came true in May 10th of this year when Maria and Mircea were able to move here permanently with Oli, Ramona, and Olivia.

Maria is survived by her loving husband, Mircea; son, Oli and his wife Ramona and 1 year old granddaughter Olivia; brother, Petru Groza, sisters Veronica Groza and Florica Iercosan as well as numerous nephews.

Visitation will be at Stevens Memorial Chapel (607 28th Street) on Thursday, September 5, from 6-8:00 p.m. Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, September 6, 2019 at Heartland Baptist Church. Online condolences may be made at www.StevensMemorialChapel.com
