Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

Donald Lee Brendeland passed away on July 17, 2019 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. Visitation will be held at CityChurch of Ames/Des Moines, 2400 Oakwood Rd., Ames, Wednesday, July 24 from 4-7 pm. A funeral service will also be held at CityChurch Thursday, July 25 at 10:00 am. A private, family memorial service will be held at a later date in Don's lifelong church, Bethany Lutheran Church in Kelley.

Don was born in Ames, IA on April 4, 1937 to LeRoy and Mildred (Nerness) Brendeland. He
grew up in Kelley, IA attending Kelley Elementary School, then transferring to Ames where he went to Welch Junior High and graduated from Ames High School in 1955. From there he went to Iowa State College graduating in 1959 with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He later returned to Iowa State University to earn his Master's Degree in 1970. Following college, Don joined the Army Reserves and after he completed his active duty, he began teaching science at Colo, IA.

In 1966, he married Shirlene Osmundson, moved to Huxley and began teaching science at Ballard High School. In 1970, he took the position of high school counselor at Ballard where he stayed until he retired in 1995. Following retirement from teaching, Don began working at Kreg Tool Company in Huxley where he wore a variety of hats including machinist, product demonstrator and customer service representative. He retired from Kreg Tool in 2007.

Don was always an avid woodworker and fisherman. He enjoyed creating projects for his children and grandchildren as well as teaching them the finer points of fishing. Yearly family vacations at Lake Kabekona in Minnesota, since the age of three, provided countless memories. Don was always up for an adventure and during their retirement years he and Shir enjoyed traveling to various destinations around the country.

Don was always interested in civic affairs and served in several capacities. He served three terms on the Story County Planning and Zoning Board, four separate terms as a member of the Huxley City Council, a member of Governor Ray's Blue Ribbon Committee to improve recruitment and retention in the Iowa National Guard, and several terms on the board of the Huxley Development Corporation. Don was a lifelong member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Kelley. Over the years, he served on the church council, sang in the choir and taught Sunday School.

Don is survived by his wife of 53 years, Shirlene; his children Kathlene (Steve) Pietsch; their children Rachel and Conner; Linda (Jonpaul) Sauer, their children Porter and Brenden, and Eric (Fia) and their children, Cullin and Erica. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.
