Interment was on the family lot in Evergreen cemetery at Collins with Dan and Dorsey Wilson, Ray and Merle Brown, Chas. and Ray Evans, all of whom were long time neighbors of the deceased, acting as pallbearers. The following is a short sketch of the life of the deceased and was read in part at the church services.William Edward Fertig, son of William and Matilda Fertig was born on a farm southeast of Collins on Nov. 12, 1869. he was one of a family of 10 children and his death marked the passing of the last of a highly respected pioneer family of this community. At the age of nine years he moved with his parents to Fort Collins, Colo., and there he grew to manhood. He was married in 1891 to Miss Alice Brown of Fort Collins and they made their home for many years in Colorado where because of his love for horses he became interested in the stock business.
Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Fertig, all of whom survive. After many years in the west he and his family came to Iowa making their home again on the farm where he was born. In 1919 Mrs. Fertig passed away. On May 31, 1923 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Eva Smith of Collins and their home has been in this community. The past two and one-half years they lived in town. He is survived by his wife, his children, Mrs. Clayton Brown of Marion, Mrs. Lee Morrison of Battle Lake, Minn.; Mrs. Chas. Carr, Mrs. Leo Cooper and Hugh Fertig, all of this community and his 10 grandchildren. In young manhood while engaged in riding the range, the deceased met and made a lifelong friend, Mr. Harry Neff, who at the present time lives near Rhodes, but is moving in the near future to Collins. Mr. Neff came often to visit Mr. Fertig during his long illness and friendships such as this made his life beautiful.
The services were largely attended, friends coming from a distance to pay their respects to one whom they had known and loved for so long.
