PIONEER WOMAN WAS LAID TO REST

MRS. JOHN BALLARD DIED AT HOME NEAR CAMBRIDGE WAS PIONEER

In the death of Mrs. John Ballard, near Cambridge a few days ago that part of the county lost one of its pioneer people, Mrs. Ballard, being a native of Union township, born there May 9 1863.

The funeral of Mrs. Ballard was held Sunday afternoon, September 2, at two o'clock, at the United Brethren church, Cambridge, conducted by Rev. Peter Jacobs, former Cambridge man, now of Perry.

A quartet consisting of Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Fish, Miss Beatice Lexvold and Roy Whitehead, with Miss Hazel Thompson as accompanist, sang two special hymns and Mrs. Fish sang a solo. Pall bearers were W. J. Adams, Fred Warner, Sam Severson, A. R. Severson, William Garlock and E. J. Erickson. Interment was in the Cambridge cemetery.

Mrs. Ballard, born Rose Ann Scott, was a daughter of a pioneer family and she became connected by marriage with another. Both were among the earliest settlers in the south part of the county.

Rose Ann Scott, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Scott, was born in Story county, May 9, 1863. At the time of her death, Thursday, Aug. 30, she had passed the sixty-fifth year of her life. Her early life was spent on a farm four and a half miles northwest of Cambridge. Here she was active in the affairs of her school and church.

February 17, 1878 she was united in marriage to John Ballard of Cambridge, To this union ten children were born. Two preceded their mother in death, Ellsworth and Elizabeth. The eight living are Mrs. Cora Longnecker of Elkhart, Mrs. Mary Scott of Oskaloosa, John Ballard of Redfield, Clyde Ballard of Des Moines, Mrs. Ethel McPherson of Cambridge, Mrs. Rose Cory of Pilot Mound, Mrs. Winifred Townsend of Bloomfield, and Forest Ballard of Livingston, Texas. Besides the husband, members of her own family, she leaves a sister, Mrs. A. R. Brown of Walnut Grove, Minn., and two brothers, S. A. Scott of Portland, Oregon and Rev. D. W. Scott of LaPorte City, Ia.

All of her life was spent in and near Cambridge. Her first associates were the children of the pioneer families. She has witnessed a remarkable transformation in this portion of the state. As a mother of ten children she has contributed her share toward the increase of the population of her native state. To their nurture and development she devoted her every energy. She saw them grow to manhood and womanhood and assume their places of responsibility. She was highly esteemed and greatly beloved by her neighbors and friends. The many beautiful floral tributes gave evidence of the regard in which she was held. She will be most keenly missed by her husband. Their wedding anniversary day this year marked the completion of a half century of fellowship.

A worthy mother, a considerate neighbor, an appreciative friend, a pioneer citizen has gone from our midst.
