Jeffrey Scott Hartman
May 30, 1967 - June 8, 2019Jeff was born in Lincoln, Nebraska on May 30, 1967 and died June 8, 2019 in Ames, Iowa. He grew up in Ames attended school and graduated from Ames High School in 1985. During high school he was an active participant in track and especially enjoyed cross-country running. As a result, he was an avid runner throughout his life running numerous marathons and distance runs in the US and several foreign countries. He ran the Boston Marathon several times.
He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1989 and received his medical training at Duke University School of Medicine receiving his MD in 1993. He became a US Army doctor doing his residency in emergency medicine at Darnell Army Hospital, Fort Hood, Killeen, TX. He served his active duty period at Irwin Army Hospital, Fort Riley, Kansas until 2000. After serving in the Army he focused on serving as a locum tenens emergency room physician at various hospitals in Missouri, Minnesota, South Dakota, California, Nevada, Australia and Guam.
Jeff particularly enjoyed fishing, camping and outdoor activities. He enjoyed his vacation home at Lake Tahoe and spent several weeks each summer at his cabin in northern Manitoba, Canada. He loved his participation with many friends in RAGBRAI each summer.
Jeff is survived by his parents, Ken and Sally Hartman of Ames; his sister Julie (Brian) Coffin of Overland Park, Kansas; nieces Ashley (Grant) Moehlenhoff of Kansas City, Missouri; and Amanda Coffin of Overland Park, Kansas, along with the aunts, uncles, cousins and hundreds of friends he made throughout his life. His love of others, his generous heart and service has left a tremendous impact on all those who know him.
He will be buried at the Iowa Veteran's Cemetery in Van Meter, Iowa. A memorial service will be held at Memorial Lutheran Church in Ames, Iowa at 11:00 am on June 15, 2019. The family will greet visitors starting at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, Jeff requested that people donate blood at their local blood bank or the American Red Cross in his memory. Other memorials can be directed to the Ames Education Foundation to support the Ames cross-country memorial or to the family for distribution as he has directed to Christian outreach and veteran organizations.
