Glenn “Avon” Hall, age 100, of Ames, passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2019 at his home.
Born on February 21, 1919, he was the son of Gust Adolf and Nellie (Bowers) Hall in Colo, Iowa. Avon served his country during W.W. II in the U.S. Navy as an Aviation Ordnanceman, 1st Class. He was united in marriage to Lila Strum on May 29, 1942 in St Louis, Missouri. Avon worked as Parts Manager at Mathison Motors, was a 75-year member of the Ames Legion, member of the Elks club, an avid golfer, and a member of the Bethesda Lutheran Church. Avon loved feeding and watching birds and squirrels, he was an ISU fan and Chicago Bears fan. Avon was honored to be the Grand Marshal of the Ames 4th of July Parade in 2017. In February, he celebrated his 100th birthday, just as sharp and witty as ever, commenting that the secret was “Fast Women”, “Good Whiskey” and “Lucky Strikes.”
Avon is survived by his children: Gary Hall of Ames, Janice (Jim) Halverson of Huxley, Cindy (Don) Swanson of Ames, and Carole (Kim Florke) Hall of Mingo; seven grandchildren: Amy (Brian) Mintun, Brett (Emily) Halverson, Amanda (Chris) Richter, Lauren (Matt) Swanson-Hurley, Al (Mary) Roche, Dennis Roche, Ron (Heather) Roche, 9 great-grandchildren with one on the way; a sister Betty Davis; and many nieces and nephews.
Avon was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lila; a daughter, Vicki Roche; a grandson Michael Roche; brothers, Vincent Hall and a brother in infancy; and special friend Mary Smith.
Funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Ames Municipal Cemetery.Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Adams Funeral Home and online condolences may be left for the family at www.adamssoderstrum.com.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Avon’s name may be directed to the Ames American Legion, 225 Main St., Ames, IA.
