Obituary for Doris Jean Stokke
Doris J. Stokke of Ames passed away on June 6, 2019. She was 93.
Doris was born on December 6, 1925, to Harmon and Rena (Bacon) Miller of rural Menlo, Iowa. She graduated from Panora High School in 1943, where she served as Class President and completed normal training to become a teacher. In the fall of 1943 at age 17, she began her career. Doris taught in one-room schools in Monteith and Dale City, Iowa, before accepting the teaching position at Pleasant Valley School in rural Menlo, where she taught for the next nine years.
On October 16, 1955, Doris married the love of her life, S.R. “Sam” Stokke, of Ames. The couple made their home in Ames, where Sam owned Ames Cycle Company. Doris served as company bookkeeper until the couple retired in 1973. She was a homemaker, gardener, seamstress, and skilled cook and baker, all the while raising three children born in 1957, 1958, and 1959. Doris took pride in a well-stocked pantry of home grown and home preserved foods, and always had a little extra to share with those in need. Doris was an avid crocheter, and dozens of her afghans found their way to homes across the United States and as far away as Australia.
Doris loved to travel with her husband, children, and friends, and traveled widely throughout the United States and much of Canada. Following retirement, she and Sam enjoyed being snowbirds and spent many happy months with friends and family in Michigan, Texas, and other parts of the country. After Sam’s passing, Doris continued her travels, to Lake Tahoe, Texas, Illinois, and Washington, D.C., as well as to other places.
Doris was the last surviving charter member of Nevada Baptist Church, in Nevada, Iowa. She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School there for many years, and devoted countless hours to various other projects at the church. In her later years, she was known as Grandma to all at the church, a title she relished. She dearly loved her church family. Her most cherished role, though, was that of grandma to her two beloved granddaughters, Lauren and Melody.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Harmon and Rena; her husband, Sam; two brothers, Dale and Harold; one sister, Margaret, and two nephews. She is survived by two sons, Douglas (Jodie) of Story City; Delayne (Christine) of Ames, her daughter, Kymm Stokke of Ames; two sisters, Goldie Miller of Guthrie Center and Norma Miller of Menlo; brother-in-law Wilson McCurdy of Guthrie Center; granddaughters Lauren (Stokke) Papke-Larson of Windsor, Colorado and Melody Stokke of Story City, grandson-in-law Andrew Papke-Larson of Windsor, Colorado, and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Nevada Baptist Church, 210 West 3rd Street, Nevada, Iowa, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 10, 2019. Funeral services will be at Nevada Baptist Church on Tuesday, June 11, 2019, at 1:30 p.m., with Pastor Dennis Reynolds officiating. Burial will be at Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Adams Funeral Home and online condolences may be left for the family at www.adamssoderstrum.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Nevada Baptist Church, or to the charity of one’s choice.
