Funeral Services for Thomas Chentland Were Held Sunday
McCallsburg, Aug. 11--Funeral services for Thomas Chentland, 78, who died at this home near Garden City, August 5, were held on Sunday, August 8, with a brief service at the home and maine service at the Zion church with Rev. H. N. Bakke in charge. Grace Weaver was at the piano. There were solos by Franklin Lee, who sang "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" and by Randall Hatteberg, who sang "Taenk Naar Engang." Mr. A. Mork, a close neighbor for nearly 30 years, spoke in Norwegian. There were several gifts of money to Mrs. Chentland from relatives and from the two Ladies' Aids in the Zion church.
The pallbearers were M. Michaelson, R. E. Lee, Randal Hatteberg, A. Mork, Olaus Tungland and Theo Olson. The remains were interred in the Zion church cemetery.
Thomas Chentland, a son of Samson and Bertha Chentland, was born August 5, 1859 in Aardal, near Stavanger, Norway, and died at his home south of Radcliffe, August 5, 1937, 78 years of age.
He came to America at the age of 21, coming to Story city. For several years, he worked on farms around Roland. Then he bought a farm three miles southeast of Garden City where he lived until three years ago.
In 1896, he was married to Miss Dorothea Tveidt. To this union were born nine children, three boys and six girls, all living at present.
For the past four years, he has been poorly part of the time, but his last illness was quite brief, lasting only about one week.
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife and nine children Otis, Radcliffe, Martin and Edward, Garden City; Bertha, Mrs. Thomas Eness, Britt; Wil Lena, Mrs. Sven Melling, Forest City; Selma, at home; Della, Mrs. Carl Voage, Forest City; Verna, at home; Clara, Mrs. Arnold Christenson, McCallsburg. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren and one half sister, Mrs. Pete Olson of Marshalltown.
