Mrs. Van Gundy Died Saturday; Funeral Services Today
Mrs. W. S. Van Gundy,74, of 733 Lincoln avenue, died at Iowa sanitarium Saturday evening at 6:00, following a stroke which she suffered earlier in the week.
Brief funeral services were held at the Bishop funeral home here at 1:00 p. m. today, after which the funeral party accompanied the body to Slater where services were held at the Methodist Episcopal church at 2:30, with Rev. O. O. Hobson pastor of the U. B. church at Cambridge, in charge. Burial will be in the Slater cemetery.
Mrs. Van Gundy had been a resident of Nevada for probably 15 years, coming here with her family from Slater. During their residence here she conducted a boarding and rooming house.
Paulena Otena Rohney, daughter of Peter and Serena Rohney, was born in Little Hammer, Norway, March 29, 1864 and departed this life Oct. 22, 1938, aged 74 years, 6 months and 23 days.
When three years of age she came with her parents to this country living in Chicago for some time. Later they moved to Wisconsin, from there to Iowa, where they settled on a farm in Polk county.
Here she grew to young womanhood. She was united in marriage to William S. Van Gundy on April 9, 1884 and to this union were born seven children, six daughters and one son; two preceded her in death. Mary who passed in infancy and Emma Cole who passed into the great beyond in the year, 1930.
The surviving children are Mrs. Clara Fudge and Mrs. Zada Davisson of Nevada, Iowa; Mrs. Goldie McConahay [sic] of Des Moines, Iowa; Mrs. Lenna Hobson of Earlville, Iowa; and the son Oley of Louisville, Kentucky.
Nineteen grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, the husband, one brother and a host of friends and relatives left to mourn her death.
She was a kind and loving mother, sympathetic and kind to the needy and never failed to help in times of trouble even to denying herself to give to others.
At the age of 15 she was confirmed in the Lincoln Lutheran church.
In the year of 1904 she united with the United Brethren in Christ church.
She was stricken Wednesday morning and was taken to Iowa Sanitarium, where she departed this life.
