VERNON CHITTY DEAD....
Two Die In CrashVernon Chitty, 43, Nevada and Mrs. Harold Woolsoncroft, 56, Ames, were killed Wednesday night in a headon collision of cars on Route 30 east of the North Grant School and Mrs. Grace Gluck, 45, Nevada, riding with Chitty is in the Mary Greeley Hospital with serious injuries.
It happened about 11:45 p. m. on a clear stretch of road. Mrs. Woolsoncroft was on the wrong side of the road and driving alone, officers said.
Sheriff Shalley and Deputy John Stark, called to investigate the accident, reported that Mrs. Woolsoncroft died enroute to the hospital. She was unconscious when loaded into the ambulance, but groaned as she was moved.
Mrs. Gluck has a broken hip and has bruises and lacerations. This morning she is reported to be on the critical list.
Sheriff Shalley estimated that the two cars may have been traveling 50 miles per hour when they hit.
When Chitty was going toward Ames, he stopped at the Morris Van Sickle house and bought a dollar's worth of gasoline for the '53 Plymouth. When the wreck took place, it was almost in front of the Van Sickle driveway as he was returning.
When Mrs. Woolsoncroft's husband appeared at the hospital he told officers he had expected an accident.
This accident brings the death toll on highways to 7 in this county for this year.
Chitty is survived by a wife and by one son, Fred, a high school student. He had two brothers, Roy and Russell and one sister, Mrs. Vernon Huntrods, living east of Fernald. One teen-age son, Darrell, was killed in a car crash last year.
The body of Vernon Chitty was removed to Ryan Funeral Home in Nevada where it will remain until services Saturday at 2 p. m. in the Evergreen Cemetery in Collins.
Mrs. Woolsoncroft is survived by her husband and by brothers and sister in Michigan.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
