Merlyn Duane "Grandpa Great" Brown
December 9, 1922 - March 30, 2019

Mr. Merlyn Duane Brown, age 96 of Temple, passed from this life on Saturday, March 30, 2019.

Merlyn “Brownie” Brown was born December 9, 1922, to Clio C. Brown and Jessie M. (Moats) Brown in Corydon, Iowa. He married Bessie “Betty” Barber on January 27, 1945, in Corpus Christi, Tx, and was married for 71 years. He served in the US Navy during WWII as a Petty Officer 1st Class assigned to CASU #1 at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, as an aviation ordnance supervisor. He was a 70-year member of the American Legion. Brownie was orphaned at an early age and overcame many obstacles with his determination, strong work ethic, and dedication to family and country. He married the love of his life and they enjoyed playing cards, dancing, gardening, entertaining friends and raising their family. Brownie owned and operated Brown’s Sinclair Service Station in Ames, Iowa, for 30 years prior to his retirement. He will be remembered for his witty sense of humor and unconditional love for family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty; son, Michael Duane Brown; granddaughter, Erin Richardson; 3 brothers and 2 sisters.

Those left to honor and cherish his memory are his two daughters, Joan Ervin and husband George of Temple and Kathy Richardson and husband Scott of Carroll, Iowa; nephews, Larry Hiatt and wife Shirley of Nevada, Iowa and Pete Brown and wife Elaine of Mankato, Minnesota; 7 grandchildren, Holly Brown and husband John of Temple, Brian Corbin and wife Laura of Jonestown, TX, David Corbin and wife Stacy of Temple, Tx, Matthew Ervin and husband Daniel of Austin, Tx, Steve Ervin of Copperas Cove, Tx, Michael Richardson of Carroll, Iowa, and Jeff Richardson and wife Genevieve of North Aurora, Illinois; 12 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; as well as many other beloved friends and family.
A funeral service will be held in Iowa at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the American Legion or the American Heart Association.
