FATHER AND SON WERE LAID TO REST
N. R. CLIFT, PIONEER ZEARING BUSINESS MAN DIED SUDDENLY AT IOWA FALLS
Zearing, March 23--Death laid a heavy had on a Zearing home during the latter part of the week when a father and son were summoned. N. R. Clift widely-known pioneer resident and business man of this place, passed away Friday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Carl Anderson, at Iowa Falls. His second son, Dr. Guy E. Clift, coroner of Polk county, died in a Des Moines hospital Saturday morning.
Death of the elder Mr. Clift was very sudden, and due to heart disease. He was 78 years of age and native of Philadelphia.
Mr. Clift had been a resident of Zearing sixty-one years, having come here when 17 years old. For many years he was in the implement and grain business here, retiring only a few years ago owing to his advanced age. He and his wife celebrated their golden wedding three years ago.
For the past two months Mr. and Mrs. Clift had been with their daughter Bertha at Iowa Falls, because of Mrs. Clifts's failing health.
Surviving Mr. Clift, in addition to his widow, are two sons and two daughters. The eldest son in Sydney R. Clift of Ames, manager of the Ames Canning Company. The youngest son is Ray Clift, of Iowa City. The elder daughter is Mrs. Carl Anderson* of Iowa City, and the younger daughter is Mrs. Carl Anderson, at whose home Mr. Clift died.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Evangelical church and burial was in the Zearing cemetery.
Dr. Clift's death followed an illness of several months, and two weeks ago he underwent a surgical operation. He had been in a state of coma for the past few days.
Dr. Clift, who was about 40 years of age, had lived in Des Moines twenty years. he had been coroner of Polk county for the past seven years. he is survived by his widow and two children.
Funeral services for Dr. Clift were held in Des Moines Monday and interment was in Glendale cemetery.
*SUBMITTER'S NOTE: The "elder daughter" was Mabel V. Clift who was married to Oscar D. Anderson, not Carl Anderson as stated. The younger daughter, Bertha F. Clift, was married to Carl Anderson.
