Funeral Services Held at Slater for Pioneer Farmer

Slater, April 26--Funeral services for Ed Ryg, 70, were held Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Arthur Yttrevold and at 2 o'clock at the Bethlehem church. The services were in charge of Rev. E. C. Rorem who took the twenty-third Psalm for his scripture reading.

The many beautiful floral offerings were arranged by Miss Edna Houge and Miss Ruth Parsons.

A large number of gifts of money were presented by relatives and friends in his memory, to be used for home and foreign missions in connection with church work

The Riis quartette sang "That Beautiful Land," a Norwegian solo "Den Store Hvide Flok" was sund by Mrs. M. S. Heggen. "Going Down the Valley" was sund as a trio by Mrs. Robert Strother of Story City and her sisters, Mrs. Orlin Lein and Miss Gladys Christianson. The pallbearers were Casper Rimathe, Andrew Maland, N. O. Inle, A. L. Peterson, John Ihle and John Richardson. Burial was made in the Bethlehem cemetery.

Ed Ryg was born in Etne, Norway, Feb. 26, 1870 and died April 21, 1940 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Art Yttrevold at the age of 70 years, 1 month and 25 days.

He came to America at the age of 12 years with his parents, Aan and Elie Ryg. They settled near Lisbon, Ill. and later moved to Iowa. He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith. His marriage to Miss Susan Ryan took place Oct. 22, 1892 at St. Luke's church in Slater. They made their home at Lisbon, Ill, for several years. In 1901 they moved to a farm north of Slater where he lived the remainder of his life.

Seven children blessed this union. A son Elmer died Dec. 9, 1936. His wife died March 16, 1934. Mr. Ryg who was a farmer, was also in the implement business for several years. He always took an active part in the affairs of the community. He was a devoted husband, a king and loving father. His health had been gradually failing the past year. About two months ago he was taken to the University hospital at Iowa City for an operation, but it was found that it could not be successful if performed. He returned home to his daughter, where he was seriously ill the past six weeks.

He is survived by his children: Mrs. James Storing of Hamilton, N. Y.; Mrs. John Berhow of Des Moines, Mrs. Porter Chelsvig of Kelley; Mrs. Art Yttrevold, Miss Josie Ryg and Clarence Ryg of Slater; twelve grandchildren, on sister-in-law, Mrs. Julia Ryg, four nieces and three nephews of Morris, Ill. and a large number of relatives and friends.
