Mrs. John Benjamin Funeral Services Are Held Monday
Mrs. John Benjamin, 802 Sixth St. died at 9:10 a.m. Saturday, December 16, 1961 at the Gilmore Rest Home, where she had been a patient fir eight weeks. Precious to being transferred to the nursing home, she had spent several months as a patient at the Story County Hospital where she was taken after suffering a stroke, July 21, 1960.
Although she had suffered from poor eye sight for a number of years, she had cared for her own home until her final illness. She was 92 years, 7 months and 28 days at the time of her death.
Carrie Alma was the youngest daughter of Abner and Elizabeth Jane Elliott. She was born in Story County April 20, 1869 in Johnson Grove near Fernald, she spent most of her life in Nevada.
December 19, 1900 she was united in marriage to Oscar John Benjamin in Nevada at the home of her parents. They continued to live in Nevada, where the groom was the senior partner of the Nevada Evening Journal. Mrs. Benjamin continued to work in the office at the Journal where she had been employed for a number of years.
The Benjamins spent all their married life in Nevada, except for two years that they lived in Des Moines, when they continue their work at the Journal. Mr. Benjamin died May 10, 1951 after a lingering illness.
Survivors include two nieces, Mrs. E. F. (Anna Fay) Clark and Mrs. Ben (Eva) Ackerman both of Nevada, their husbands and children, and by a host of friends, by whom she will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and one sister.
Funeral Services
Funeral services for Mrs. John Benjamin were held at the Ryan Funeral Home, Monday, December 18, 1961 at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. E. P. Windman officiating. Music was furnished by Mrs. Irene Dobson at the organ.
Casket bearers were Paul Ackerman, Kenneth Clark, John Croker, Jerry Hines, Leo Kinyon and Terry Landis.
Burial was in the Nevada cemetery.
