Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.
Doris Jean Halverson, 91, born to Katherine and Elmer Petersen September 10, 1927, passed away at The Israel Hospice House in Ames on March 4, 2019.
Doris attended North High School in Des Moines and graduated in 1946. She enrolled in nursing school at what was then the Iowa Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing. After graduation she enjoyed many years of nursing before her retirement.
She met the love of her life, Marion “Red” Halverson, and they were married on February 27, 1949. Doris and Red enjoyed a life of adventure while camping, traveling, and entertaining their many friends and family. Their life story together ended with Red’s death in 2005. After Red’s passing, Doris continued living six months out of the year in Mesa, Arizona, where she was involved in her church, enjoyed many friendships, and welcomed all “snowbird” visitors to her home. The balance of the year was spent at Diamond Campground in Woodland Park, Colorado, where she was in charge of taking reservations for the campground until the age of 90. Doris’s life of love and adventure was nurtured and enjoyed by her many family members, including her nieces and nephews who cared for her through her move to Iowa one year ago, and in her final days.
We are grateful for Doris’s many gifts, shared with us throughout her life. A sympathy card received by a loved one after her death, in few words spoke significantly to Doris’s life, “One life lived, Many lives touched.” Those touched so deeply and left to cherish her memory are her loving family: Uncle Wayne McDonald of Bullhead City, AZ, nieces; Katie (Marty) Ball of Carson City, NV, Susan (Scott) Ramfjord and son Miles of Slater, Kristin (Mike) Wilson of Urbana, MO, Mary Lande of Ankeny and nephews; Dennis (Carol) Thompson of Boone, Donald Thompson of Cedar Rapids, David (Mary) Halverson of Huxley, Bruce (Sandy) Halverson of Huxley, Jim (Janice) Halverson of Huxley, Dean (Kerin Overturf) Halverson of Ames, Scott Halverson of Ankeny, Paul (Jan) Lande of Huxley, Jan Anderson family, Doris’s Colorado family, and a host of extended family members and friends.
Doris will be reunited in heaven with her husband, Red, parents, sister, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home in Ames is handling the arrangements. Per Doris’s wishes she will be cremated, no services will be held, and internment next to Red will take place at a later date.
The family would like to thank Ballard Creek for welcoming Doris into its family one year ago, and for her care throughout this past year. Also to Mercy Hospital, The Israel Hospice House, family and friends for their thoughts, prayers and care of Doris over these past weeks. Memorials can be made to Ballard Creek, Madrid Home, or the Israel Hospice House in Doris’s name.
