Last Rites Held For Wm. Spurling

NEVADA--Funeral services for James William Spurling were held from the Ryan Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 with Elder O. P. Jones the Seventh Day Adventist church officiating.

Mrs. Ray Lounsberry and Mrs. Floyd Brown sang as a duet "Sweet Bye and Bye" and Mrs. Lounsberry, soloist, sang "Sweet Be Thy Rest." Miss Karaly Barger was the organ accompanist for both numbers.

The casket bearers were Sam Banks, Peter Durby, Williard Marion, Arthur Kirchoff, James Kalsem and Roger Kalsem.

Burial was in the Nevada cemetery.

Obituary

James William Spurling, son of John and Mary Spurling, was born at St. Anthony in Marshall County, Iowa on Aug. 19, 1880, and departed from this life on July 6, 1958 at his home in Nevada.

He had been ill for four months. He was 77 years, 10 months and 17 days old at the time of his death. He had been in the hospital for one month, but he spent the last week of his life at home with his family.

On Sept. 28, 1927, he was united in marriage with Myrtle Belle Prosser. They have lived in Nevada continuously since that time. He leaves to mourn his death his wife, Myrtle, one daughter, Joyce, her husband Donald Hunter, one grandson, his brother, Charles D. Spurling of Nevada, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

When he was nine years old he moved with his parents from St. Anthony to a farm near McCallsburg. He spent all of his life in Story county with the exception of two years which he spent in northern Iowa. He farmed with his brothers for several years before moving to Nevada.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and three sisters. He was a great lover of flowers, and he enjoyed many hours cultivating them in his yard.
