Obituary.
Jared L. Smith was born in Newberry District, S. C. Aug. 29, 1810, died at he home of E. M. Smith, near McCallsburg, Oct. 19, 1895, aged 85 years, 1 month, and 20 days. He came from South Carolina to Indiana when fourteen years of age, and lived Randolph county until 1804, when he came to Story county with his family, and spent the remained of his life in the vicinity of Nevada. He was the father of Mrs. Oxley, living in the south part of town, and Emanuel Smith near McCallsburg. His wife died July 10, 1889. Mr. Smith was entirely blind for a number of years, and made his home with his children. He had been a life long Baptist, and died in that faith. He was a very kind and generous hearted man, and much respected by all who knew him. The funeral was held in the Baptist church in Nevada Sabbath at 2 p.m. and was conducted by Rev. Ferguson of Maxwell, assisted by Rev. Elliott, of Colo, and Rev. Miss Sanborn of Nevada.
