From Fredregill Family Funeral Home obituary, Collins and Zearing, Story County, Iowa:

Darlene Ann Roberts, 81, of Zearing, IA passed away on Sunday, December 30, 2018 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 4, 2019 from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Cornerstone Church of Christ in Zearing, IA. Funeral services for Darlene will be on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at the Cornerstone Church of Christ in Zearing beginning at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Chuck Ryan officiating. Burial will follow in the Lincoln Township Cemetery in Zearing, Iowa.

Darlene was the first of 4 children born to Henry Jacob and Anna (Timmer) Negan on June 24,1937 at a rural farm home southeast of Allision in Butler County, Iowa. Darlene was raised on the farm that she loved. She graduated from Shell Rock High School in 1955. She attended Gates Business College, and after a year she worked at Cedar Falls Trust and Savings Bank in Cedar Falls, IA. Darlene fell in love with her high school sweetheart, Jack Roberts and they were married in Parkersburg, Iowa at the Christian Reformed Church on November 23, 1956. Darlene followed Jack in his early service in the Navy, living in Portsmouth, VA then they lived in Fayette, IA while Jack attended Upper Iowa University, then Monona and McCallsburg. Finally they moved to Zearing, Iowa where they made their home for fifty years.

While living in Zearing, Darlene drove the school bus for the NESCO community school district for many years including children with special needs. She then worked at Security State Bank in Zearing. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Zearing. To the union of their marriage was born Rodney Alan Roberts (wife Patricia), Deborah Ann Siemens (husband James), Terry Duane Roberts, Cynthia Rae Phillips (husband Virgil), Angela Lynn Lund (husband Brian). She has 11 grandchildren 14 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Darlene began playing piano and guitar at the age of 12. Darlene and her sister Barbara Jean sang for many occasions. This included KNWS, a Christian radio station back in 1954 and the KIOA Des Moines radio station, where the girls were the act of the year and won a horse. The girls played solo guitar, and sang together over KWWL television. They even made a record. It was a lifetime of music for Darlene and her sister Barb. Darlene gave piano and guitar lessons from 1966 to 2016 in the McCallsburg/ Zearing area. In moving to the Iowa Veterans Home Darlene continued giving guitar lessons. Darlene played keyboard for the worship team at Cornerstone Church of Christ. She was an avid Iowa State Cyclone fan. She had a beautiful love for flowers, birds and plants, having the green thumb "touch". In addition she enjoyed sewing, cross stitch, and the computer where she stayed in constant touch with all her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Loved by all, she leaves great memories that include lots of love and laughter. Through the years Darlene became a more devoted Christian. She instilled her saving faith to her husband, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and anyone who she came into contact with. She was a living example of the fruits of the Spirit. Darlene was a charter member of Cornerstone Church of Christ in Zearing.

She was preceded in death by her parents Henry and Anna Negan; her parents-in-law Francis and Arline Roberts; one grandson Ryan Douglas; her sister Barbara Jean Schrage; brother James Henry Negan, and sister-in-law Beverly (Roberts) Briese and brother-in-law Robert Briese.

Those left to cherish her loving memory are her husband, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, one brother Ronald Negan (wife Susan); sister-in-law Lee (OK_Hui) Negan; brother-in-law Darwin Schrage; brother-in-law Jim Roberts (wife Virginia); and her aunt Elsena "Senie" Kramer; many nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many many friends.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Hope Ministry Homeless Shelter in Des Moines, Iowa.

Fredregill Funeral & Cremation Care, in Zearing, has been entrusted with the care of Darlene and her family.
