Art Olson is dead at the age of 67
Arthur Ellwood Olson, 67, former owner and publisher of the Story City Herald and community booster there for almost a half a century, died Tuesday afternoon at Story City Hospital after a one-day illness.
Mr. Olson was born in Chicago Nov. 7, 1902 and came to Story City High and attended in 1905. He was graduated from Story City High and attended college at Naperville, Ill. While in college he worked on the staff of the Naperville Clarion and with his father on the Story City Herald when be returned home from college.
Since the death of his father in 1952 he had been owner and publisher of the Herald until he retired about three years ago. He was married to Jean Marie Norlin of Dayton on June 16, 1934.
He is survived by his wife, and a sister, Mrs. A. B. Rosenburger of Estherville, and was preceded in death by his parents, Paul A. and Hildora Olson, two brothers, Paul H., who died in 1945 and Earl, who died in infancy.
Mr. Olson was a charter member and past president of the Story City Lions Club; a charter member of the Story City Men's Chorus and a member of the Kohlnoor Masonic Lodge and the Elks Lodge.
He was a past member of the Iowa Press Association and had served on the Iowa Press Association legislative committee. He also was a past president of the Story County Editor's Association.
He sang in the choir at the Grace United Methodist Church for 35 years. He also served as a member of the Story City Greater Community Congress and also served on that organization's public relations committee, including the Story City Centennial committee in 1955.
He was a booster for conservation and was actively interested in hunting and fishing. He also boosted community recreation and good sportsmanship. He pitched for the Story City baseball team for 20 years and was an avid golfer.
A Republican, he has served as a precinct committeeman and has been a member of the County Republican Committee.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Grace United Methodist Church in Story City, with the Rev. Paul Beckman in charge. Burial will be in the Story City Cemetery. The body is at the Soderstrum Funeral Home.
Masonic rites will be held on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 8 p.m. at the Soderstrum-Larson funeral home for Arthur Olson.
