Life Ends for Harry Dana Sunday at the Age of 92
Harry W. Dana, an integral part of the public life of Story County for many years, died Sunday afternoon at the Story County Hospital at the age of 92.
Mr. Dana was a former Superintendent of Schools in Cambridge, was assistant bank cashier at Cambridge, served as Story County Treasurer, was Iowa State Sales Tax Collector, Mayor of Cambridge, a member of the Nevada School Board, an was a Justice of the Peace.
Until just the past few months Dana had led an unusually active life for a man of his age. He walked to the office regularly. His mind was active and alert and his outgoing personality and sense of humor were passports that made him a welcome part of every group.
In recent months he had become somewhat unsteady in balance and took up residence at Oak Park Manor. He provided much enjoyments for other residents there.
He became ill three days ago, was admitted to the hospital on Saturday after suffering a stroke.
A native of Boone County, Dana was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dana. He had lived in Nevada for the past 51 years and before that 12 years in Cambridge.
He was a member of the Unitarian Church in Perry.
He served as (in over of date) superintendent of schools in Cambridge, assistant bank cashier at Cambridge, Story County Treasurer, Iowa State Sales Tax Collector, and Justice of the Peace in Nevada.
He belonged to the Nevada Community Club, was a Mason, a past member of the Story County Peace Officers Association, was 20th Century Club past president and secretary for a number of years and was named an honorary member of the Nevada Rotary Club a few years ago and attended their meetings frequently.
He had held four public offices: Story Co. Treasurer, Justice of the Peace, Nevada School Board member, and Mayor of Cambridge.
Survivors include one son, Robert Dana of Nevada; and two grandsons.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, a sister, and his wife, May, who died in 1963.
Funeral services will be held from the Ryan Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 with the Rev. Frank P. Hladky officiating. Burial was in the Perry, Ia. Cemetery.
