Story City, April 29--Last rites were held Monday afternoon, April 26, at 1:30 at her home in Story City where she passed away early Wednesday morning, and at 2 o'clock in the St. Petri Lutheran church, for Mrs. Alice Helvig, resident of that community for more than 50 years. Her pastor, the Rev. S. T. Nelson, officiated and special music was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. Donald Helvig who sang "The Old Rugged Cross" in a duet, and Mr. Helvig sang "The Lord's Prayer." The body was laid to rest in the Story City cemetery. Serving as casket bearers were B. E. Gandrup, Casper and Sanford Torkelson, Albert Thompson, Clarence Helvig and Milford Birkeland.
The following obituary was read at the church:
Alice Louise Torkelson, daughter of Chris and Cecelia Torkelson, was born March 15, 1876, on a farm three and a half miles southeast of Story City. She was baptized and confirmed in the Bergen Lutheran church in Roland, and attended the Mathre school.
On June 6, 2895 she was united in marriage to Ole K. Helvig. To this union six children were born, two having died in infancy. Those surviving are Earl of Des Moines, Sherman of Williams, Palmer of Story City and Hazel (Mrs. Arvin J. Nelson) of Story City. There are also seven grandchildren and one great grandson, and two sisters, Severie (Mrs. I. J. Hill) of Story City and Susie (Mrs. Jacob Berkeland) of Morris, Illinois surviving her departure. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, who died in 1935, one sister Anna and four brothers, Hans, Tom, Martin and Henry.
Mr. and Mrs. Helvig lived one year on the Helvig farm two and half miles west of Roland before they moved to Story City. At that time they transferred their membership to the St. Petri Lutheran church. Mrs. Helvig was an active member of the congregation and Ladies Aid. In the community she was a member of the Woman's club. Her love of nature was given expression in her yard of flowers throughout the summer and plants in the house throughout the winter.
Mrs. Helvig passed away on April 21, 1948 at the age of 72 years, 1 month and 5 days.
