John Charles Johnson, 79, formerly of McCallsburg, passed away on Friday, September 28, 2018 at Bethany Life in Story City, Iowa. A memorial visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at Bethany Lutheran Church in McCallsburg, Iowa from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at Bethany Lutheran Church at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Kathy Sandmann officiating. Burial will follow in the Warren Township Cemetery in McCallsburg, Iowa.

John was born on October 18, 1938 in Nevada, Iowa to Myrl and Lola (Lundy) Johnson. John was baptized and confirmed in the Bergen Lutheran Church in Roland, Iowa. He was raised in rural McCallsburg on the family farm and graduated McCallsburg High School in 1956. He attended Waldorf College in Forest City, IA where he graduated in 1958. He also attended the University of Iowa and UNI. John worked for 40 years at State Bank and Trust in McCallsburg, where he also sold insurance. He married Connie Christenson at Bethany Lutheran Church on July 29, 1961. Together the couple raised their family in McCallsburg. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, the Bethany Choir, McCallsburg Fire Department and First Responders, and the Nevada Masonic Lodge #99. John's hobbies included model railroading, fishing, woodworking, and music. He began playing drums for a Dixieland band as a freshman in high school. He later played with a country band. In 1980 he started his own bluegrass band Glorybound and then later formed Prairie Trail Bluegrass.

Those left to cherish John's loving memory are his wife of 57 years Connie Johnson of Story City, IA; daughters Robin (Jeff) Collins of Nevada, IA, Phyllis (Dave) Minnehan of Churdan, IA, and Christine (Dave) Skinner of Zearing, IA; son-in-law Tim Adams of Eldora, IA; grandchildren Megan (Bobby Neilson) Collins, Amy (Jereme) Cox, Nathan Collins, Makayla (Devin) Bailey, Madilyn Minnehan, Josh (Allison) Minnehan, Jeffrey (Julia) Minnehan, Jackie (Tanner) Scheuermann, Aric (Suzie) Jurgensen, Claire, Mea, and Lili Skinner, Coltin (Michelle) Adams, and John Adams; great-grandchildren Lola and Jordan Cox, Tucker, Clara, and Gwen Bailey, Aubreigh and Owen Minnehan, Vincent and Alexia Minnehan, Sawyer Scheuermann, Sawyer Jurgensen, Savannah Deupree, and Victoria Adams.

John was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Jodi Adams, brothers Bobby and Larry Johnson, sister-in-law Beverly Johnson, and brother-in-law Eugene Christenson.
