Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.
Marian Cornell, age 91, passed away September 27, at Accura Health Care in Ames. Private family services will be held at a later date at the Gilbert Cemetery.
Marian "Mimi" Cornell was born October 11, 1926 to John and Emily (Eide) Mathews in Ames, Iowa. Mimi graduated from Gilbert High School and West Virginia State College in Charleston. Mimi and Royce Cornell were married June 20, 1948 in Ames. She was a vice-president of Chicago Area Bank, now JPMorgan Chase & Co., and retired in 1982. Mimi served on the Executive Board of the Girl Scouts of America of the Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana, was the Service Unit Manager of the Salvation Army of Chicago, was Director of the Northwest Industrial Council of Chicago, and was on the Advisory Council of Township High School District 214 near Chicago. Royce and Mimi moved back to Ames in 1982.
Mimi's grandparents, Charles and Sarah (Manges) Mathews, were pioneers in the mid-1800's to the Gilbert area. Sarah's family came in a covered wagon from Pennsylvania. Charles and his brother came from Wisconsin to the area on horseback looking for land. He acquired land in the Gilbert area and along with two other men, started the town of Gilbert in 1879. He donated land east of the railroad, which was built at the same time, as well as another parcel to be used as a cemetery. Charles later relocated to the current Squaw Valley area where he accumulated eight farms, which was left to his surviving children in 1918. The through street in Gilbert, as well as a street in Squaw Valley, are named for him.
Mimi is survived by her husband, Royce Cornell of Ames; her daughter, Cathy (Gary) Smith of Woodbridge, Va.; her grandchildren, Leslie (Darryl) Lawton and Jennifer (Jon) Derby; and three great-grandchildren, Silvie Lawton, Cameron Lawton and Clementine Ann Derby.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, John Mathews, Jr.
